City Year at 93-11.
AmeriCorps members greet students at arrival, tutor math and literacy in eleven 3rd–5th grade classrooms, and run our afterschool program — weekday mornings through 6:00 pm.
To build democracy through citizen service, civic leadership, and social entrepreneurship — demonstrating the power and idealism of young people, engaging citizens for the common good, and developing the next generation of leaders.
What a City Year day looks like.
City Year members begin the day by energetically greeting students at various arrival points throughout the school. They then work inside eleven 3rd–5th grade classrooms, providing math, reading, and writing tutoring for both small groups and the class at large.
In addition to academic tutoring, members also hold attendance conversations with students facing obstacles to getting to school regularly. Together they work out strategies to manage those challenges and improve attendance.
When City Year members aren’t in our classrooms, you’ll find them running our afterschool program or planning the logistics for events our schoolhouse community puts on.

Homework help plus social-emotional growth.
City Year Afterschool at PS 149Q fosters an educational atmosphere by providing assistance on homework and social-emotional development. Members work with students on social-emotional skills by giving them an opportunity to interact with caring adults and peers during daily snack and club time.
